:::::Gut Healing Herbal Formula:::::
The root cause of many chronic health conditions, from mood disorders, mental fatigue, itchy skin and immune disorders such as autoimmune conditions and atopic diseases is an unhealthy gut. Unhealthy gut tends to be leaky, meaning it has a reduced ability to assimilate the nutrients and to protect the body from foreign invaders due to impaired gut mucous membrane. The gut lining is playing an important role in preventing the harmful bacteria from entering into our system. It also regulates the immune system because a large amount of immune cells are found along the gut lining, which affect the well-being of our whole body. When a partially digested food molecules irritates the gut lining, they are likely to behave as a triggering factor for challenging our immune system, often manifesting as an immune disorders such as asthma, eczema and other autoimmune conditions.
Gut Healing Herbal Formula include herbs that lower the inflammation in the gut via a few different mechanisms. Some work on modulating inflammatory mediators and others reduce the permeability of the gut by coating the gut layer.
One of the most important herbs used to address the gut permeability is Marshmallow. Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a demulcent herb that is rich in mucilageous polysaccharide, having a tendency to form a protective layer over the irritated mucosa. It also soothes inflammation. (2)
Demulcent herbs help the body to heal the damaged tissue itself by trapping the water strongly on local tissue and providing moisture to it, just like we put a bandage on wound as a first aid.
Plantain and ribwort belong to the Plantaginaceae family, and also have a potent demulcent and anti inflammatory actions. Both can be used interchangeably to sooth any irritation occurring in mucosal lining of gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tracts, which share the same embryonic branch. Ribwort is a mucous membrane tonic that is used with similar status to Golden seal, the best herb used to treat any mucous membrane disorders.(3) It is traditionally used to stop diarrhoea for it has mild astringent, bacteriostatic and anti-diarrhoeal actions, making it useful watery stool and gut infection.
Ginger is anti inflammatory and stomachic herb with long tradition of its use for peptic ulcers in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Clinical studies also suggest its anti-ulcer activity as ginger provided symptomatic relief in patients with peptic ulcers in few studies.(4) Ginger helps relieve symptoms of flatulence and colic, that are often experienced among people with low gastric production and impaired digestive function. (5) It acts as a catalyst and diffusive stimulant, and attributes to balancing the energetics of the herbal formula.
Chamomile is a digestive nervine and anti inflammatory agent that is extensively researched for its therapeutic benefits on various gut issues, especially associated with stress and emotional disturbances.(1)
Peppermint and Fennel reduce the unpleasant symptoms of bloating, flaultence and gripping pain. Peppermint stimulates the bile flow, enhancing the digestion of fats and oils. Yarrow has a moderate astringency that would stop watery stool and bleeding, even addressing the permeability of the impaired gut. (speak to health practitioner if you find a bleeding or mucus in stool).
All of our gut healing herbs work in harmony to enhance the lower gastrointestinal function and strengthen the gut mucosa for a healthy digestion, assimilation and elimination of food.
Licorice is proven to be mucosal-protective in one clinic trial, and there are many other evidences that strongly support its beneficial effect on treating the gastric ulcers and inflamed gut. (1) However, it is recommended to use a deglycyrrhizinised licorice that comes in power or tablet product which can be dispensed by the Herbalist. This is to avoid the mineralcorticoid-like adverse effects that may occur when taken in sufficient dose.

Why Prefer Herbal Liquid Over Tablets? Nowadays We find more herbal products in tablet or capsule forms on the shelves of health food stores than in traditional liquid preparations. It just feels so handy and easy to swallow the capsules instead of taking the herbal liquid products. However, there are considerable advantages of using herbal liquid extracts for your health to maximise their therapeutic effects.
First, the herbal liquid extracts are the end products of the plants that contain the phytochemicals closest to the original constituents. They go through the minimal processing and thus chances of alteration in therapeutic phytochemicals are low, unlike the tablets or capsules that inevitably go through several steps of manufacturing process. Second, they have higher bioavailability than other preparations. Herbal liquids are absorbed into the blood stream and is the best way of deliveing every health benefits of concentrated herbal constituents into our system in the most effective way. Tablets and capsules need to be disintegrated and dissolved in more absorbable form in the digestive process for their therapeutic phytochemicals to become active. Not all of herbal constituents will be absorbable in some people whose guts are compromised or metabolic function is not optimal. And they contain fillers, colors, binders, coatings etc to give them a clean and colorful apperance. It is advisable to read a lable on the supplements in order to avoid the harmful additives or best recommended to use a high quality supplements from the naturopaths or herbalists.. Practitioner-Only herbal supplements in tablet/capsule forms are available only after a consultation in Mama Herbs.
